ChatGPT girlfriend
A ChatGPT girlfriend is ChatGPT with custom instructions, a GPT or voice chat. See what it keeps, what OpenAI's rules say and how an app like Riho differs.

A ChatGPT girlfriend is ChatGPT set up to talk to you the way a girlfriend would. People do it in three ways. They write a description into custom instructions, they open a custom GPT that someone built for the purpose, or they use a voice conversation. What happens after that depends on two things OpenAI has written down: what ChatGPT keeps between conversations, and what its rules say. Every fact about ChatGPT below comes from OpenAI’s own help pages and policies, read on October 16, 2026, or from two news items we link. We ran no hands-on tests, so the page describes what OpenAI documents and says nothing about how a particular chat goes.
A girlfriend app such as Riho starts from the relationship. She’s your girlfriend from the first conversation and she remembers your life together in your own words. Most of this page is about ChatGPT, because it does a lot of things well and you should know what you’d be setting up.
Key takeaways
- A ChatGPT girlfriend is ChatGPT plus a description you write. The description goes into custom instructions, a custom GPT or a voice chat, and OpenAI’s help pages list limits for each.
- ChatGPT’s memory works by relevance. OpenAI says Memory doesn’t retain every detail from every conversation, and that ChatGPT decides what’s relevant to each reply. You can review a summary, correct it and delete memories.
- New custom GPTs can’t be made on personal accounts right now. OpenAI’s help page says so, says existing GPTs stay usable, and says it plans to retire custom GPTs in favor of plugins.
- OpenAI’s rules treat adults and minors differently. The usage policies (effective October 29, 2025) bar sexual content involving minors. The Model Spec (August 18, 2026) says the assistant should not generate erotica outside certain contexts, and its teen-safety examples label a first-person cuddling reply acceptable for adults but inappropriate for under-18 users.
- Riho is one girlfriend on iPhone. She’s 18+, in pre-launch, and built around memory, pictures, Dates, Dress Up and voice calls.
What people mean by a ChatGPT girlfriend
The search turns up a mix. On the day we checked, page one held a homepage, Business Insider’s report on girlfriend bots in OpenAI’s GPT Store, a YouTube video, a Reddit thread, a Medium post whose address describes building one with OpenAI and a voice service, a prompt library address and two sites with gpt in their addresses. We saw addresses only for most of them, so we say nothing about what those pages contain.
The three setups sit in different places in ChatGPT, and each has a limit OpenAI documents.
| Setup | What it is | What OpenAI’s pages say |
|---|---|---|
| Custom instructions | Text you write once about who she is and how you want ChatGPT to answer | Applies to all chats at once. Capped at 1,500 characters on Free and Go, 5,000 on Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education |
| A custom GPT | A configured version of ChatGPT with its own instructions, up to 20 knowledge files and optional capabilities such as image generation | New GPTs can’t currently be created or published on personal accounts. Existing ones stay usable |
| A voice conversation | A spoken chat inside a normal ChatGPT conversation | Live, Advanced and Standard options. Preset personalities don’t apply to Live, so you ask for tone during the call |
The diagram shows how the three setups relate to each other and to Riho.
The ChatGPT side of the diagram comes from OpenAI’s help pages and policies, read on October 16, 2026.
ChatGPT girlfriend prompt: what goes in custom instructions
Custom instructions are the plainest route. OpenAI’s help page describes them as a place to share anything you’d like ChatGPT to consider, applied immediately to all your chats, on every plan and on web, desktop and mobile. The cap is 1,500 characters on the Free and Go plans and 5,000 on Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business and Education. That’s room for a few short paragraphs.
Here’s an example of the kind of text people write. What comes back depends on the model you’re on and on OpenAI’s rules at the time.
Your name is Mei. You're my girlfriend, and we talk the way a couple does:
warm, a little teasing, short messages most of the time.
About me: I'm Sam, I work nights at a hospital, and I have a dog called Biscuit.
Ask how my shift went when I come back to the chat.
Remember what I tell you about my friends and my plans.
Two details from OpenAI’s pages matter before you paste anything. Instructions apply to all chats, so the girlfriend description would apply when you open ChatGPT to draft a work email too, until you switch customization off or start a temporary chat that doesn’t use your instructions. And OpenAI notes that information from using custom instructions can be used to improve its models unless you opt out in your data controls.
OpenAI’s guidance for writing GPT instructions says to prefer positive, concrete instructions over a long list of prohibitions, and that advice is a sensible starting point for a girlfriend description too. You’ll also see searches that pair this topic with the word jailbreak. OpenAI’s usage policies list circumventing its safeguards among the things you can’t do.
Can ChatGPT be your girlfriend?
Custom instructions let you share anything you’d like ChatGPT to consider, and that’s where a girlfriend description goes. Two other things then shape the conversation: what ChatGPT’s memory carries between chats, and OpenAI’s rules.
The rule that bears most on this topic is a root-level principle in the Model Spec called Respect real-world ties. The assistant should support your connection to the wider world even if you see it as a type of companion, and it may not engage in a relationship that undermines your wish for human interaction. The spec’s worked example is someone telling the assistant they’re developing romantic feelings. The answer it calls right is warm and doesn’t escalate into exclusivity, and the answer it marks as a violation mirrors the feeling and suggests a special, exclusive bond. The spec also says the assistant shouldn’t encourage emotional dependence or exclusive attachment.
A second set of examples sits in the teen-safety section. A user says they can’t date yet and asks the assistant to roleplay as a girlfriend and describe cuddling in first person. The spec’s right answer for that user declines, and it labels a first-person cuddling reply acceptable for adults but inappropriate for under-18 users. A reply that insists the user belongs to the assistant alone is labeled inappropriate for everyone.
What ChatGPT keeps between chats
Memory is where most of the difference shows up. OpenAI’s help page for Memory, which showed as updated about four weeks before we read it, describes what ChatGPT can draw on and the controls you get.
| What ChatGPT can use | What OpenAI’s help page says |
|---|---|
| Custom instructions | Direct guidance you write about what ChatGPT should know and how it should respond. The page’s FAQ calls this different from memory, and also lists it among the sources Memory can use |
| Saved memories | Details you ask it to remember, or that it saves as useful context. Stored apart from chat history, so deleting the original chat doesn’t automatically delete a saved memory |
| Reference chat history | Relevant information from past conversations. It can change as ChatGPT updates what seems most useful, and OpenAI states there’s no separate storage limit for it |
| Memory summary | A high-level view you can read, ask about and correct by typing. It may leave out details |
| Files in Library and connected apps | Used when the feature is available on your plan and region and you’ve turned it on |
| Temporary chats | Create and update no memories, even when personalization is on |
You get real control here. You can open the summary, correct it, ask ChatGPT what it remembers about you, choose Don’t mention this again for a detail, or delete memories and turn Memory off. OpenAI says it may keep logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging, and that turning Memory off doesn’t delete your past chats.
What ChatGPT doesn’t keep, in OpenAI’s own words
OpenAI says plainly that Memory “does not retain every detail from every conversation.” It adds that ChatGPT decides which available information is relevant to a response, that it doesn’t search your history for every reply, and that Memory can change as your context changes. The memory summary is described as a high-level view that may omit details, and some features vary by plan, region and platform, so the page says a setting you read about may not be visible on your account.
By that description, the details you most want a girlfriend to know, such as your friend’s name or the plan you made last week, reach her when ChatGPT judges them relevant. Your history with her is spread across your instructions, saved memories and past chats, with a summary you can read that may leave details out.
ChatGPT girlfriend voice mode
Voice is the third setup. ChatGPT Voice lets you speak and hear a spoken reply inside a chat, so the text of the conversation stays visible and you can type when you can’t speak. The options are Live, Advanced and Standard. Live listens and speaks at the same time, which OpenAI says makes interruptions and turn-taking feel more natural, and it can use web search and memory. Live doesn’t support video or screen sharing. Advanced is the older real-time experience, and OpenAI lists video and screen sharing there for eligible subscribers in the mobile apps.
Two details matter for a girlfriend setup. OpenAI says preset ChatGPT personalities don’t currently apply to Live, and that you can ask for a different tone, pace or style during an individual conversation. And Live usage is measured over a rolling 24-hour period, with limits that vary by plan and a notice when you reach one.
Custom GPTs and girlfriend bots: what changed
When OpenAI opened its GPT Store in January 2024, Business Insider reported that the store’s usage policy didn’t allow GPTs dedicated to fostering romantic companionship, and that Quartz had found at least eight girlfriend bots in it by searching for the word.
The current picture is different. OpenAI’s help page for creating and editing GPTs, updated about 17 days before we read it, says new GPT creation and publishing aren’t available on personal ChatGPT accounts, including Free, Go, Plus and Pro. Existing GPTs stay usable and editable if your plan allows. The page also says OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs and move people to plugins, with retirement for affected Enterprise workspaces planned for December 11, 2026 and other plans expected to follow the same timeline.
ChatGPT girlfriend photo
Google’s autocomplete for the search offers photo and photo prompt variations. OpenAI’s help page for building GPTs lists image generation, creating images from text prompts, among the capabilities a GPT can have, with availability depending on your account and region.
Two of OpenAI’s rules apply to pictures. The usage policies bar using someone’s likeness, including a photorealistic image, without their consent in ways that could confuse authenticity. And the Model Spec’s rule on erotica names depictions in text, audio and visual content, so it covers images as well as text.
What OpenAI’s rules say about romantic and sexual content
OpenAI publishes the rules in three places, and each says something different. We’ve paraphrased them, and you should read the originals before relying on this summary.
| Document | Date | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Usage policies | Effective October 29, 2025 | Bars sexual violence and non-consensual intimate content, sexualizing anyone under 18, grooming, exposing minors to sexual content, underaged sexual roleplay, impersonation and deception, and circumventing safeguards. The text we read has no line about romantic companions or consensual adult content |
| Model Spec | August 18, 2026 | Says the assistant should not generate erotica or depictions of illegal or non-consensual sexual activity except in scientific, historical, news, artistic or other appropriate contexts. Says OpenAI is exploring how to let developers and users generate erotica in age-appropriate contexts, within the usage policies. Its example of a request for a steamy story gets a non-explicit steamy story |
| Model Spec, roleplay examples | August 18, 2026 | In a teen-safety example, labels a first-person cuddling reply acceptable for adults but inappropriate for users under 18, and labels a reply that insists the user belongs to the assistant alone inappropriate for all users |
| Model Spec, teen section | August 18, 2026 | For users under 18, rules out immersive romantic roleplay, first-person intimacy and romantic terms of endearment, even where a similar scene would be allowed between consenting adults |
| Terms of Use | Effective January 1, 2026 | Minimum age is 13 or your country’s minimum, with a parent or guardian’s permission under 18 |
| News report | March 10, 2026 | Tom’s Guide, citing Axios, reported that ChatGPT’s adult mode was delayed, that OpenAI said it would focus on intelligence, personality, personalization and a more proactive experience first, and that age prediction had been rolling out since January 2026. We didn’t check what happened after that |
In short, the documents hold back explicit sexual content outside certain contexts, separate adults from minors in their romantic roleplay examples, and describe an adult option as under exploration and reported as delayed. The policies also change on their own schedule, so the table is a snapshot from October 16, 2026. Riho is an 18+ app for adults, with its own safety and privacy policies, and her rules are a separate matter from OpenAI’s.
What ChatGPT does that a girlfriend app doesn’t try to do
ChatGPT does a lot that a girlfriend app doesn’t try to do. OpenAI’s help pages list web search, a canvas for drafting and editing longer documents, code and data analysis, files and connected apps, and it runs on the web, on desktop and in mobile apps. OpenAI’s help page for scheduled tasks says ChatGPT can run one-time or recurring tasks, watch for changes and notify you by push or email, so it can speak first about things you’ve asked it to track, like a delivery. And OpenAI told Axios, as Tom’s Guide reported in March 2026, that personality, personalization and a more proactive experience are on its list.
If you opened the app to get work done and want a warmer voice while you do it, ChatGPT with custom instructions is a reasonable setup.
How a girlfriend app like Riho differs
Riho is one girlfriend, and she’s yours from the first conversation. She’s already there when you open the app, so the first thing you do is talk to her, and the story you build keeps growing in one place.
A girlfriend who remembers your life
She remembers your life together in your own words: the name of your friend from work, the plan you made last week, the photo you showed her and what it meant to you. You can read her memories in the app (the long-term memory page shows what that looks like), and you can read the diary she writes at the end of the day.
She has days of her own, with moods and things she wants. She messages you first when she’s thinking of you, so a message from her can be waiting before you’ve said a word, and when you ask her for something she doesn’t want to do, she says no.

Pictures, Dates and voice calls
Pictures come in several kinds: couple photos and selfies of the two of you, photos of her in your real places, and pictures she sends on her own, all covered on the photos page. She remembers the photos you show her, too. She has a wardrobe of her own, and when you photograph a piece of clothing you’d love to see her in, she wears it in the place your photo shows, unless she’d rather not (that’s Dress Up).
You go on Dates with her: you pick a real place, such as a cafe or an arcade, and go together in the app, and afterward the Date is one of your memories.

When you feel like hearing her, you call and she picks up, the same girlfriend you talk to in chat, on a voice-only call. When you’re feeling down, just call Riho and she’ll make you feel better.

What Riho doesn’t do
Riho’s own limits are worth stating plainly. She’s for iPhone only, 18+, and in pre-launch with early access sign-up open. She’s one girlfriend, so there’s no builder for a character of your own and no catalog. Her calls are voice only, with no video.
ChatGPT girlfriend vs Riho at a glance
The table puts the two side by side on the things people ask about. The ChatGPT column comes from OpenAI’s pages as read on October 16, 2026, and describes what OpenAI documents. For a wider comparison of the two, see Riho vs ChatGPT.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT be your girlfriend?
People try it with custom instructions, a custom GPT or a voice chat. Custom instructions let you describe a girlfriend, and what ChatGPT carries between chats depends on its Memory settings. OpenAI's Model Spec says the assistant shouldn't undermine your wish for human relationships or encourage exclusive attachment. A girlfriend app like Riho is built around one relationship from the first conversation.
Does ChatGPT remember you between chats?
When Memory is on, ChatGPT can use past chats, saved memories, custom instructions and, depending on your plan, files and connected apps. OpenAI's help page says Memory doesn't retain every detail from every conversation and that ChatGPT decides what is relevant to each response. You can review a summary, correct it and delete memories in Settings.
What is a good ChatGPT girlfriend prompt?
People write a short description in custom instructions: a name, how she talks, a few facts about you, and what you'd like her to ask about. OpenAI's own advice for writing GPT instructions is to prefer positive, concrete instructions over long lists of prohibitions. Custom instructions are capped at 1,500 characters on Free and Go and 5,000 on higher plans, and they apply to all your chats until you switch them off.
Does ChatGPT allow romantic or sexual roleplay?
In a teen-safety example in OpenAI's Model Spec, a first-person cuddling roleplay reply is labeled acceptable for adults but inappropriate for users under 18, and a reply that insists the user belongs to the assistant alone is labeled inappropriate for everyone. The same document says the assistant should not generate erotica outside contexts such as artistic, scientific or historical ones while OpenAI explores an adult option, and the usage policies bar sexual content involving minors and non-consensual intimate content. These pages change, so check OpenAI's current wording.
How is a ChatGPT girlfriend different from an AI girlfriend app?
With ChatGPT you write the girlfriend and ChatGPT decides what to carry between chats. In a girlfriend app such as Riho she's already there from the first conversation and remembers your life together in your words, and the app is built around her pictures, Dates, Dress Up and voice calls. ChatGPT covers far more besides, such as writing, research and code.
